Do you know what canine hip dysplasia is? Dog hip dysplasia is a condition wherein the canine thigh ball socket is not fitted right with the hip bone. It may be an inherent skeletal deformity, or it may be that the tissue connecting the ball and socket is not cohesive enough to keep it perfectly fitted together. This significantly decreases the dog’s mobility as it causes extreme pain even in the simplest movements.

Hip dysplasia is, more often than not, a genetic abnormality that will develop as the dog grows older. Sometimes though, it can be caused by an injury sustained in the puppy’s legs and have not been treated properly. Symptoms do not usually manifest until much later on and the harm in this is that when it is not addressed medically, may result in the dog not being able to walk at all.

Does this seem scary? It’s a sad fact for some dogs but there are options to help you deal with it. Surgery is used to correct physical deformities of your pet’s skeletal structure. The thing is, surgery itself might be a bit too costly; not to mention the hospital visits and maintenance. Now, don’t feel bad if this is you. You can use a natural treatment for hip dysplasia that many pet owners have availed of successfully.

Chondroitin and Glucosamine are two supplements that aid in the restoration of the joint and cartilage tissues of dogs. While these natural elements are not pain killers, you will be happy to know that consistently using it will show a marked improvement in your dog after about 6 weeks. There are only a few known side effects of Glucosamine and Chondroitin; but your dog will have to be on these for the rest of his life.

Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane or MSM is a compound that will enhance the connective tissues and reduce joint inflammation which is the common cause for arthritis pain. Herbs like rosemary, licorice, yucca, alfalfa and dandelion are also helpful in easing the painful effects that this condition brings.

Along with the natural treatment for hip dysplasia as mentioned in the previous paragraphs, create a healthy diet chock-full of vitamins C and E, and omega 3 fatty acids. It is essential that you control his weight as obesity will aggravate your pets condition. Integrate their healthy food plan with light exercise that is approved and recommended by the veterinarian.

Physical activity should be relegated to exercises that are light on the joints and ligaments of the dog. This means Frisbee is out of the question. It’s fun but really, it will not be good for your pet in the long run. Try taking him for a walk or swim instead. Remember that the goal is not just building muscles and stamina, it is to develop more range of motions. The best thing you can do for him is to keep his weight low and his autoimmune system up.

I hope you gleaned a lot of helpful information about canine hip dysplasia for you to be able to help your dog effectively. Do what you can to keep your pet as healthy as possible and enjoy the best years of his life when you do.

An effective natural treatment for hip dysplasia is invaluable for the suffering canine and his worried pet owner.

Dog Training ? Best Dog Leads and Leashes

Dog leashes or leads are an extremely essential training tool or even just for general care and wellbeing for your dog. Whether you use your leash for taking you dog for long walks or only use it for teaching your dog right from wrong in the comfort of your back garden, a lead is always an important buy for you and your dog.

As a dog owner and a consumer, your choice of dog leads/leashes is as you might expect, huge. With so much choice and variations, choosing which lead or leash to use can be a bigger challenge than the actual training of your dog.

So what are the different kinds of leads and leashes? Well trust me there are thousands out there to choose from, I will only go through a few of the more popular types of leash as I’m sure there are many different types of leads being brought onto the market every week and it would be an impossible task to keep track of all of them.

In the next part of this article I will first go through the different types of lead then finish off with my personal views and preferences.

Extending leads

These do exactly what is says, they ‘extend’ away from the owner for a certain distance before running out of slack. With these leashes the owner has control of when to stop the lead extending further and can be used just like a normal leash if needs be.

Slip leads

These leads are a simple type of lead with a loop on both sides normally with and adjustable clip at the end that tightens when pulled or loosens around the dog’s neck for comfort when there is no pulling. Used by many for dog training.

Nylon leads

This is the cheaper option of dog lead, the simplest form of dog leash available, often causes rubbing and digging into your dog’s skin. Nylon leashes are best avoided.

Bungee leads

These leads help to eliminate the slack that other leads cause so that your dog does not trip over the leash and there is less pulling on your arm from a dog in the training process.

Leather leads

This is a popular type of lead that is comfortable for your dog and gives you full control of how far your dog can wonder. A good lead for training but can be tiring on your arm if your dog tends to try and pull you around.

My Conclusion

It is the preference of the trainer in hand at the end of the day but I feel leather leads are best for me and show your dog sum gentle authority when starting to train. Letting your dog wonder too far on walks can give your dog too much freedom and chance to misbehave.

If you are interested in training then I would go for a leather lead to begin, if you just like going for walks in the park or your dog is well behaved then you could maybe opt for an extendable leash.

When it comes to dog crates, they can be extremely useful in training your dog. Many dog owners use them for housebreaking. And at times, when they need to leave their dog alone for a while. So what exactly is crate training and why you should do it too?

What You Should Know About Crate Dog Training

Crate training is a well-known method of training a dog to be left alone, as well as to housebreak them, too. It is a fact that all dogs will not soil their bed if they can help it and so that is why it makes an excellent method of housebreaking a puppy.

Dog crates come in a number of different sizes, so it is vital to get one that is big enough to fit your dog. Even if your puppy is quite small, it would still be a good idea to buy a crate that will fit the dog until it becomes fully grown. This way you will save money as you will not have to go out and purchase another crate later on.

The good news is that crates are not only good to train puppies, but they are also great for an adult dog too. Older dogs enjoy going into their crates sometimes as it provides them with a safe haven to rest and have their own space.

You can also use the crate for basic obedience or whenever your dog is a little too much to handle, just place him in there for a little while. Now it is important not to shut him away for hours on end. A crate should only be used when needed and should never be used to cage a dog in there for extended periods of time. This is especially true when house training puppies to not mess up the floor and home.

As mentioned earlier, dogs will never make a mess of their bed unless they have to. So it is important when you keep a puppy in the crate overnight, that you let it out frequently. Puppies cannot hold on all night and you may need to wake up every few hours to let them out of the crate.

As also mentioned earlier, a crate should only be used when needed and leaving a dog inside for too long may elevate their stress level. I highly recommend that you only use it for a few hours. But if the crate is large and roomy enough, it can be left overnight.

A dog crate is an excellent tool for separation of anxiety, as many dogs will ruin furniture and make a big mess when left alone. As you can see, a crate has many uses and can be an excellent piece of equipment to have for any dog or puppy owner. Tip: a plastic crate is highly recommended by most animal experts.

When deciding on buying a crate, treat it like a dog’s master bedroom and be sure that his crate is big enough, comfortable and sturdy. Trust me, you will yield greater results with your dog loving you for it!

Puppy care can be overwhelming, yet it can be made more difficult with the higher instances of illnesses because of poor breeding. A diseased puppy with a potentially shortened lifespan, or lifelong debilitation, can be even harder to handle. Golden retrievers are one of the most commonly owned breeds in the United States. Their popularity has resulted in the retriever being associated with many illnesses and the most common one is hip dysplasia. Because of the increase in abandonment of pets, there are more available for golden retriever adoption from rescue groups.

Often people decide to get a dog because of the way they look rather than investigating the breed’s characteristics and how those traits will fit into the family. It is common for people to be oblivious to what type of behavior should be expected and get a rude awakening when what they thought would have the temperament of a golden retriever actually has the disposition of a pit bull. Puppies are cute, but a lot of time and attention need to given to them in order to evolve into a well mannered dog. Inexperienced dog owners often feel overwhelmed with the amount of time needed and often they choose to get rid of their dog.

Golden retrievers are typically gentle mannered dogs, yet many of them get neglected, or even abused. Often times this occurs when the owners do not take the time to train or give the dog affection. When it acts in a way their owners don’t like, the unknowing pet winds up being the target of abuse.

Handling abused and neglected dogs can be difficult. After being rescued from a shelter, they often don’t have the typical friendly, loving personality of a golden. Usually they are scared and nervous, often leading to behavioral problems. When rescue groups try to get a dog adopted, sometimes these issues can be an obstacle.

Found in most states, rescue groups go to the animal shelter and find golden retrievers that have been neglected, abandoned or abused. These groups rescue the dogs and save them from the possibility of euthanasia by putting them in a foster home prior to adopting them out.

Prices for adoption from these groups are typically less than those of a breeder. The only drawback is the potential of health and/or behavioral problems that need tending to.

Adopting through rescue groups is economical, but they usually have many requirements prior to adoption. Applications must be completed and interviews are held. The main objective is to make sure that the potential home is a healthy environment and all are dedicated to the mental and physical health of the dog.

Rescue groups are wonderful because they have saved golden retrievers from kill shelters and put them in foster homes for them until an incredible family is found to adopt a precious golden. Without these groups, many dogs would have been killed. In order to adopt through those groups, it is imperative to be not only more informed about the breed, but also be ready to create a nurturing environment for the new pet. Golden retriever adoption by a family patient enough to help the dog get accustomed to a nurturing life among people is important for the health, mental and physical, of the canine.

Tips for Training an Older Dog

There is a saying that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. For many people with an older dog that was never properly trained they probably think this is true. Just like people do, when dogs get older they get pretty set in their ways. Think old and stubborn. This of course is not entirely true; it is possible to train an older dog but it will take more time and patience.

The thing with older dogs is they have been behaving in a certain way their entire life and to them that is the way things are. They do not distinguish between right and wrong like people do. For a dog repetition is their primary way of learning and if all they’ve done is the wrong thing their whole life their behavior will reflect that.

One thing you can try with an older dog is to make the training you are doing seem like it is actually the dogs idea. If he thinks it’s his idea he will more than likely keep doing it. He probably will resist your attempts to force him to do something like sit. But if he sits on his own give the command “sit” at the same time and reward or praise him. If you keep doing this, repetition, before long your old dog will be sitting when you tell him to. You can use this technique with a variety of commands such as come, heel, and stay.

It is certainly not true that all older dogs are more difficult to train but for the vast majority of dog owners this is the case. Dealing with the stubbornness of a dog set in their ways can be difficult and frustrating but if your dog is exhibiting bad habits and behavior it is important to break them of that. In the long run have a well trained and obedient dog will make both you and your dog much happier and will lead to a stronger bond.

If your old dog is being particularly stubborn and your not making any head way on your own then consider joining a dog training class or working with a professional dog trainer. This will give you the benefit of working with people who have experience with all sorts of dogs and their different behaviors. You might be amazed how quickly your dog responds to someone who knows how to deal with their behavior problems. These are also lessons you can take home and continue to use as you train your old dog to do new tricks.

Nikko is a 10 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. Our challenge was teach Nikko the speak cue. Nikko didn’t know what the word meant in the beginning. After all, dogs do not speak English. This is not a dog training tutorial. I created this video for a friend and to illustrate that any healthy, normal older dog this is physically able, CAN learn new tricks with the use of positive reinforcement and clicker training. ***Note: I used lots of high-pitched praise because this is one of Neko’s motivators, along with cheese. However, in a normal clicker training session, it is best to avoid making too much “white noise.” Also, when teaching a dog to speak on cue, it is VERY important to capture the behavior when there is no underlying emotion present. In other words, DO NOT praise a dog or puppy for barking at other people, dogs, or animals.*** Special thanks to Josh Woodward for his song, “Omaha.”

Arthritis it is such an inconvenient and distressing ailment which, unfortunately, is a reality for many people. While there are still some things we can do about it, the animals we hold dear in our lives cannot. Their well-being hinges completely in our ability to provide the best life for them and it is our responsibility to find out what can be done when it does happen to them.

If you don’t even want to bother yourself with finding the right dog arthritis treatment, then make it a point to do what it takes to keep it at bay. How do you do this? Perhaps the best preventative measures you can take are to keep your pet on a healthy, nutrient rich diet; and a regular exercise regimen. You can also give him specific vaccines that target this particular ailment.

For most dogs, arthritis is the result of old age – meaning that the years of their excessive roughhousing have finally caught up with them. Sometimes it is because of some physical abnormality, injury or sickness that aggravates their health and lead to a form of arthritis. To help ease the suffering of your pet, avail of effective arthritic treatments for dog that alleviate the effects of this disease.

Where do I find these arthritic treatments for dogs? You can access these almost anywhere. Pet shops and specialty canine sites offer some of the best treatments that will treat your poor pet. Before you zero in on the treatment though, you must have your pet examined thoroughly. Get an accurate diagnosis and consult the vet on what is the best course of action to take regarding this.

NSAIDs are non steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs that are prescribed to animals with arthritis. There are several kinds of these that are generally safe to use. You must ask the vet on what to get and how much to give in what schedule. NSAIDs will ease the pain that arthritis brings to your pet.

Of course there are cases where adverse side effects have been reported because some chemicals do not sit well on some dogs. Some side effects to watch out from are vomiting, bruising, rashes, labored breathing, bloody poop and a change in the dogs defecation habits. If you see this happening, go immediately to the vet and ask him to alter the dosage of the medication; or even take him off it completely.

You can also make use of more natural therapies to fight the degenerative effects of arthritis. Alfalfa, stinging nettles and yucca herbs are effective in easing joint pains and muscle soreness. Shellfish and mussels are known to be helpful in restoring the health of connective tissues. You can also massage some olive oil in the painful parts of your dog to bring immediate pain relief and ease stress.

I know it must be difficult to see your pet suffer from arthritis. However, with these tips and the appropriate dog arthritis treatment, you can ensure a better quality of life for him, significantly decreasing his discomfort and anxiety. Look out for the symptoms of this ailment and visit the vet when you see them manifesting.

Things to be Avoided: Dog Training Advice that Works

Hiring a professional trainer to teach your dog to become acquainted with basic things is actually not necessary. You can do this task by yourself. Yes, you’ve read it right, you can teach your dogs even if you are not a professional animal trainer; all you need is a set of dog training advice that is surely effective in teaching your pooch. Believe it or not, you only need to remember what should be and shouldn’t be done during dog training. Read on to digest these steps:

• Do not punish your pet- Punishing your dogs is a big no-no. Hitting your pet is already considered as a violent act. If your canine friend did something wrong, like shredding your important papers, just get the pieces of papers and drag it away. Never punish your pet if it does the wrong thing. Your dog might assume a pessimistic view that it is not loved that’s why it receives such punishment. Your pooch might find it difficult to correct itself since it is afraid to commit a single mistake. As an outcome, the poor dog may never attempt to do anything at all. Just think that like human beings, dogs also learn through the trial and error method, and as the owner, your task is to make your pet ignore its wrong habits with the absence of punishments.

• Do not ignore your pet’s incorrect behavior- If you cannot punish your pet, it does not mean that you cannot scold it. Believe it or not, dogs can sense if their masters are angry or not even they are not punished. How? When a trainer raises their voice and keeps a serious eye contact with their pets while scolding them, the pet senses that their owners are not happy with what they have done. It’s like reminding them that wrong deeds can make their masters discontented.

• Do not just call him if you want to do something it doesn’t like- This is the dog training advice that is often forgotten even by expert trainers themselves. Sometimes, we call our pets when we want to tie them up, or if we want to scold them. This will give your pooches an implication that whenever you call its name, it will receive a very bad treatment. Always try to call your pooch when you want to feed it or if you want to play with it. If it hates taking a bath, try to be to make bathing time a more fun activity. Even if you just want to hug your dog, call your pet by its name by using endearing tones so it may know beforehand that you are going to do something he loves.

Patience is needed in doing these steps since it can take about a few months to teach your dog. Sticking to the dog training advice you have just read is not enough. You also need to be patient enough to teach your adorable pets. The length of the training period depends on the skill of your pooch in absorbing information. You must not be angry if your dog will disappoint you or you might just scare your dog away. You must remember that a dog still comprises wild animal instincts that affect its personality. Besides, when the dog is afraid of its master, it will be hesitant in following its master’s orders. If your pooch is sociable, then it can totally trust you with whatever it is that you teach him.

Quick trivia: Arthritis is not a new ailment specific only to humans. Dinosaurs from way back suffered from this degenerative and painful disease even before we even knew about it. Interesting right? Yes, we are not the only species that suffer from arthritis. Many times, our pets succumb to this as well.

Canine arthritis is really a lot like human arthritis. It is when the joints and cartilage are damaged severely causing stiffness and extreme discomfort for the poor animal. More often than not, this disease comes about through old age so take special care of your senior pets when they reach 10 years old. You can get an effective dog arthritis medicine to help him with his pain.

As previously mentioned, this disease is generally caused by old age; but there are cases where even puppies suffer from a kind of arthritis also. When younger dogs get their legs injured and have not been properly treated; or when an infection or sickness sets in that complicates an already delicate health issue, arthritis can occur. You need to look out for some signs and symptoms of this disease so you can prevent it from progressing further.

Some symptoms of arthritis include restlessness, physical and behavioral changes, reduced mobility, and flinching when they have been touched. These symptoms are quite similar to another distressing canine disease – dog Lyme disease. You must have an accurate diagnosis of what your dog is going through. Only then can you acquire the right pet arthritis medicine for your dog.

Once the nature of his disease has been verified to be arthritis, you must plan a beneficial lifestyle for him together with the pet arthritis medicine. This simply means that you make an extra effort in putting in more vitamins and nutrients in his meals that will help in fighting this disease.

People with arthritis have been helped with generous servings of omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin C. It is highly probable that this will prove true for the arthritic canine as well. Add a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, and fish oils to his meals. Include helpful herbs like mussels, stinging nettles, yucca and alfalfa with what you serve him. These natural herbs enhance joint health and help in detoxification.

Two dietary supplements that are used to combat arthritis are Chondroitin Sulphate and Glucosamine Sulphate. These elements aid in alleviating pain because they help bring lubrication to the joints and cartilage. NSAIDs (non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs) are commonly used for the treatment of arthritis. NSAIDs are good supplements to an effective arthritis therapy.

Bear in mind that while human arthritis is very similar to that of canines, the treatment should not be the same. Never attempt to treat your ‘ disease without consulting your vet first. A dog arthritis medicine should always be under the supervision of a licensed vet to administer the specific dosage and frequency needed. Take regular trips to the vet for his best health.

Pet owners are looking for the pet arthritis medicine that will change to their suffering dog’s condition. Look no further! HealthyHappyDogs.com gives you the most effective dog arthritis medicine that veterinarians recommend.
